Neon Abyss 2 entered Steam Early Access on July 17, 2025 and reached 1.0 on October 8, 2026, launching the same day on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Nintendo Switch (day one on Game Pass). Early Access ran about 14 months, during which Veewo shipped five numbered Major Updates, several named smaller updates, and one free boss DLC. This page walks through them in order — useful for returning players catching up, and for new players gauging how far the launch build has moved.

The five major updates, one by one
Major Update 1: Rule Changer (2025-09-19)
The first numbered major update, built around letting players customise their own runs:
- Ban system — the most requested community feature. You can ban any Faith, weapon, item, Relic or even whole room categories you don't like, and banned content stops appearing in later runs.
- New Agent R7 — a humanoid robot, teased as "returning players will find this familiar". R7 is the successor to the original game's popular robot R-6; R-6 itself is confirmed not to return.
- Three co-op combat styles:
- Fight Alone — your power comes entirely from your own resources; good for veterans who want to do their own thing.
- Balanced — damage is shared between personal and team resources; good for carrying newer players.
- United Front — everything is shared; the most team-oriented experience.
- The patch also improved co-op resource allocation and added the new standard boss God of Nuclear.
For co-op players this update's combat-style choice matters more than the Ban system. Pick Balanced for matchmade groups; save United Front for a fixed team pushing deep floors.
Major Update 2: Fatal Carnival (2025-11-27)
- New Agent Mira — a jester who dances on the edge of destruction, built around turning damage into spectacle. High risk, high reward.
- Three new bosses:
- Manager boss Hermes, who races through a signal network at light speed, mixing bullet patterns with repositioning.
- Manager boss Athena, who first returned free with Archenemy Returns and was promoted to Manager tier here — built around full-screen gazes and predictive attacks.
- Standard boss God of Stand-Up, a carnival-themed comedian.
- Dedicated co-op and visual improvements — the second direct response to Early Access criticism about online stability.
Major Update 3: Glimmer Heist (2026-01-29)
The deepest systems overhaul of Early Access:
- New Agent Cassie — a treasure hunter from the slums, designed around chests and resource drops.
- Training Center — test weapons freely inside the base and measure damage output, so build theory can be verified numerically instead of by trial and error in live runs.
- Stats rework — the old vague stat panel split into six values: Damage Bonus, Attack Speed, Projectile Range, Damage Radius, Critical Chance and Luck, all viewable in real time from the pause menu.
- Relic extraction — Relics can be extracted into stat gems and permanently invested into a stat, extending build growth from the run into the account.
- New bosses — the original game's legendary Titan Prometheus returned as free DLC, alongside the standard boss God of the Art Exhibition.
- A new roadmap shipped alongside it, and the Curse system was deferred in that revision.
Major Update 4: Weapon Reforge (2026-03-05)
- Full weapon system rework: every weapon now carries fixed affixes plus randomly generated dynamic affixes, making build depth the headline feature. The affix system had been live on the test branch since February 5, 2026.
- New boss: Aphrodite, Goddess of Seduction.
- The Blackdog base patch interface was refreshed, and the roadmap toward 1.0 was published.
Major Update 5: Wonder Flow (2026-06-14)
- One new Agent and several new bosses. The Agent's name and unlock condition were not given in the public announcement — check the in-game Agent list.
- The base was fully rebuilt as a bar-style scene, which became the basis of the 1.0 base visuals.
- Timed with Steam's free weekend from June 11–15, this was the last large content update before 1.0.
Other notable Early Access updates
Early Access launch (2025-07-17)
The launch build already had the full frame: procedurally generated side-scrolling dungeons, the rebuilt build-driven weapon system, hatchable and evolving Hatchmon, the run-long Faith system, and up to 4-player online co-op. The starting roster was Nik and Elise, with Saya, James, Xuan and others unlocked through tasks. Early Access was priced at $19.99, with Veewo stating the price could rise after launch. Early Access saves carried into 1.0 intact.
Fire Support (2025-08-18)
- Added the Blackdog "patch" system: after a loss you can pick a pre-built opening loadout and dive straight back in, sharply reducing the frustration of repeated restarts.
- Added a batch of attack speed, range and projectile items, plus fixes and number tuning across many weapons — the first large-scale weapon pass of Early Access. It opened on the test branch on August 13 and shipped on the 18th.
Archenemy Returns (October 2025)
All 34 bosses from the original Neon Abyss returned free, in waves (standard bosses first, Manager-tier bosses after). Every one received ability tuning and VFX upgrades, and several were fully reworked. Anyone who claimed it during Early Access keeps it permanently at no extra cost. Returning bosses such as Athena went on to receive new Manager-tier forms in Fatal Carnival.
Where Early Access actually moved
Across 14 months of patch notes, Veewo's effort concentrated on four lines:
- Weapons, over and over. From Fire Support's number fixes to the Weapon Reforge affix overhaul, weapons are the most-frequently changed module in the game.
- Co-op, continuously repaired. Rule Changer's resource allocation and combat styles, then Fatal Carnival's dedicated co-op work, target the biggest pain point in Steam reviews. 1.0's graduation of Storm Breach — fast, 1–4 player co-op — continues that line.
- Making builds legible. The six-stat split, the Training Center, Patch preset loadouts and the Ban system together turn buildcraft from a black box into a reproducible decision.
- Content volume. Roughly one new Agent and a batch of new bosses every two months, plus 34 returning bosses, took the 1.0 item count past 600 including returning classics from the original.
Returning player quick reference
- Your save is fine. It carries straight over. Start in the Training Center to learn the affix system, then check the new Agent profiles at the bar.
- Here for co-op? Start with Storm Breach — faster-paced than a normal run and built for 1–4 players.
- Chasing bosses? The 34 returning bosses from Archenemy Returns and Prometheus are all free; claim them and work Manager-tier first, standard bosses after.
- Wondering about 1.0 exclusives? Veewo confirmed "new content that wasn't in Early Access" without publishing the full list. Confirmed items include the final boss Theia (three phases), the achievement system, the Artisanism rework (Badges plus new affixes), and a day/night cycle in the fishing room with a hidden boss.
- Wanting the lowest price? The $19.99 Early Access price was the confirmed floor, and Veewo stated the price could rise after launch.
Release cadence
Major Updates landed roughly every 2–3 months: September's customisation (Rule Changer) → November's content and co-op (Fatal Carnival) → January's systems overhaul (Glimmer Heist) → March's weapons (Weapon Reforge) → June's send-off content (Wonder Flow) → October's 1.0.
