What's New in This Sequel
Neon Abyss 2 keeps the original's "grab items, stack them, snowball" skeleton, but bolts on several interlocking systems on top. Their defining trait is that they feed each other: Faith recruits Hatchmons, hatched Hatchmons advance Agent unlocks, Agents determine your starting weapon, and unwanted weapons can be Vaporized back into Faith. Building a real run means treating the five systems as one web, not five separate buttons.
The game left Early Access with its 1.0 release on October 8, 2026, launching on PC (Steam), PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch, with online co-op for up to four players. Anyone who bought in during Early Access keeps the Archenemy Returns DLC for free permanently — it brings all 34 bosses from the first Neon Abyss into the sequel. A TapTap mobile version is also available.
| System | In one sentence | Deep dive |
|---|---|---|
| Faith | The spendable resource of a run, with three competing outlets: shops, Hatchmon recruitment, and gambling | Faith & Temples |
| Items | Five categories, no carry cap — the more you stack, the more absurd each pickup becomes | Item Categories & Synergies |
| Weapons | Four archetypes (melee, plants, summons, guns) with fixed/dynamic affixes plus Reforge | Weapons, Affixes & Reforge |
| Hatchmons | Five base forms, each with its own evolution tiers; complete a set to auto-fuse | Hatchmon Eggs & Evolution |
| Fate Cards | Permanent meta-unlocks that define how every run starts | Fate Cards & Meta Progression |
The Five Systems at a Glance
The resource flow of a single run boils down to one sentence: items make you stronger, weapons decide how you fight, Faith decides where your resources go, Hatchmons turn investment into long-term power, and Fate Cards make sure you start every run from the right position.
| Flow | How it works | Decision point |
|---|---|---|
| Items → Power | Uncapped stacking; more copies of a theme means more explosive synergies | Insta-pick duplicate items, or skip to save for a weapon swap |
| Weapons → Faith | Vaporize unwanted weapons to convert them into Faith | Two weapons in hand — keep one, Vaporize the other |
| Faith → Three outlets | Buy items / recruit Hatchmons / gamble for jackpots | Patch today's weakness, or invest in future floors |
| Hatchmons → Agents | Lifetime hatches advance Agent unlocks (e.g., Elise needs 8 total) | Chase eggs this run, or save Faith for the shop |
| Fate Cards → Start | Unlocked outside runs; sets starting shields, Hatchmon count, etc. | Before pushing high floors, fix your opener on the Fate tree |

Make them Item Categories & Synergies and Faith & Temples. The first decides what you pick up on every floor; the second decides what you spend on every floor.
How the Systems Interlock
Faith → Hatchmons → Agents
Recruiting Hatchmons with Faith isn't just run-level power — it also grinds Agent unlock progress. The classic example: Elise unlocks after hatching 8 Hatchmons total, and her signature Hatchmon Kiddy can revive a downed partner — a team-wide safety fuse in 4-player co-op, and effectively an extra life in solo runs. Pledging to the Faith Agapeism guarantees every hatch succeeds, turning pet-raising from a dice roll into a stable investment.
Weapons → Faith
Vaporizing a weapon you no longer want is the standard way to convert idle loot into Faith. Combined with the Artisanism temple's yield bonuses, a single Vaporize refunds a meaningful chunk of Faith, creating a "farm weapons → Vaporize → buy/gamble → repeat" loop. Vaporizing is irreversible, so never break down a weapon before you've finished Reforging it.
Faith → Items
Some items scale directly off your Faith value (for example, extra projectiles while your Faith is full), so "should I spend my Faith?" becomes a build decision in itself: spending it makes you stronger right now, banking it keeps the item's effect online permanently.
Fate Cards → Your Opener
Fate Cards decide how many shields and Hatchmons you start a run with, which directly determines whether you survive the first two floors. They are the only one of the five systems that works outside a run — when a weakness is obvious, spending Fate points on it beats any in-run technique.
Build Archetypes: Where to Start
These four routes are well-tested by the player base, ordered from easiest to hardest. Each lists its core systems and the key decision it hinges on; click through for the full breakdown.
1. Item Snowball (Difficulty: ★☆☆)
- Core systems: Items (uncapped stacking)
- Plan: Grab everything. Unlimited stacking means your sheet snowballs on its own.
- Key call: Prioritize item families that feed themselves — the "same-theme breeds more same-theme" combos (full list on Item Categories & Synergies)
- Best for: First story clear, learning room pacing
2. Hatchmon Army (Difficulty: ★★☆)
- Core systems: Hatchmons + Faith (Agapeism)
- Plan: Run Agapeism for guaranteed hatches, rush Elise, then lean on Kiddy's revive plus raw pet-count damage for the late game.
- Key call: Pour Faith into recruitment and eggs; only buy items that add pets directly.
- Best for: Co-op — Kiddy's revive is worth double on a team. See Co-op for squad setups.
3. Vaporize Faith Engine (Difficulty: ★★☆)
- Core systems: Weapons (Vaporize) + Faith (Artisanism)
- Plan: Swap weapons constantly, Vaporize the old ones for Faith, amplify each conversion with the Artisanism temple, then dump the surplus into gambling for rare items.
- Key call: Never Vaporize before Reforging; touch the gambling table only when Faith overflows — treat it as a bonus, not income.
- Best for: Players who know the weapon pool and want to actively pilot their economy
4. Melee Burst (Difficulty: ★★★)
- Core systems: Weapons (melee affixes) + Fate Cards
- Plan: Use Fate Cards to patch up starting shields and survivability, then commit to melee's high-multiplier dynamic affixes and Reforge-lock the good rolls.
- Key call: Melee lives and dies on positioning — shield-granting Fate Cards and defensive items outrank raw damage.
- Best for: Players who clear the first two floors consistently and want to chase speedruns
No archetype is strictly better: the item snowball has the highest floor, the Hatchmon army's ceiling depends on hatch tempo, the Vaporize engine tests your economy discipline, and melee bets everything on execution. Clear the game with the snowball first, then branch by taste.
Per-Floor Decision Checklist
- [ ] Check the shop first thing: Is there an item that completes a synergy? If yes, plan your Faith spending around it; if no, bank the Faith as insurance.
- [ ] Weapon either/or: Compare affixes against your current archetype. Keep the loser for now — decide Vaporize vs. Reforge after the boss.
- [ ] Eggs and hatch slots: If your Hatchmon count is close to an evolution set, prioritize Faith for guaranteed hatches; if it's far off, redirect to the shop.
- [ ] Charge the Faith altar before the boss room: Entering a boss with a stored Faith bar is one extra layer of safety over walking in empty.
- [ ] Gamble only on overflow: Don't touch the table until you can already afford your next core item.
- [ ] If you go down, call your teammates first: In co-op, a Hatchmon's rescue beats crawling back yourself — save the revive resources for the next floor.
