Why co-op needs role discipline
Neon Abyss 2 supports up to 4 players online, with no cap on items carried and no cap on synergies. Veewo's store copy puts it plainly: "band together to multiply each of your unique synergies." Four players stacking four different systems gain far more than four players competing for the same resource. Flip that around and if all four go coin builds and all four chase Hatchmon, the run deadlocks on floor 1.
The whole principle reduces to one line: each team resource fattens exactly one player.
One easily missed detail: every Agent's unlock task except Xuan's counts across runs. So your first few sessions as a group are themselves unlocking characters for everyone — when assigning roles, favour systems your not-yet-unlocked members want progress on, and you get both the unlock and the build.
The four-player role frame
| Role | Responsibility | Agents | Why |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clear / crowd control | Handle packs and bullet-saturated rooms | James, Saya | Dual weapon slots plus the vaporize loop keep damage flowing |
| Single-target burst | Burn boss health bars and elites | Saya, Xuan | Dash invulnerability frames and talisman chase are both single-target tools |
| Summon and pet support | Run Hatchmon, revive downed pets, supply bodies | Elise | Kiddy revives nearby downed Hatchmon |
| Resources and Faith supply | Operate coins, crystals, keys and Faith for the team | Nik, Lúcia, Cassie | Nik drops coins when hit; Lúcia converts via two Curio slots; Cassie opens locks without keys |
In a three-player party, drop the resource slot and fold it into the clear slot. For two players, keep the minimum split of "one earns, one deals damage". These are opening assignments only — with unlimited items, anyone can pick up overflow from another system later.
Agent co-op reference
| Agent | Starting weapon | Agent Item | Co-op role |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nik | Windcaller — extra laser every 4 attacks, power scales with coins held | Legacy Watch — drops coins when hit | Team wallet. All coin items go to him; run Consumerism, borrow, and hoard without spending. Starts with 3 hearts, 1 key, 1 bomb |
| Elise | Warming — Hatchmon-type, homing projectile every 5 shots, stronger per Hatchmon | Plush Gloves — permanent Kiddy, revives downed Hatchmon | Summon core. All Hatchmon items and eggs go to her; she is the team's hatch engine. Starts with 4 hearts, the sturdiest body of the six |
| Xuan | Fanchen — Wisp-type sword, charged shots fire homing talismans, one per Wisp | Clarity Gourd — grazing charges it; clears nearby bullets and releases Wisps | Bullet management plus single-target burst. All Wisp items go to him. Only for players comfortable grazing |
| James | Final Wolf — coin-scaled spread shot, pellet count rises with coins | Wedding Rings — dual-wield; vaporizing yields more Soul Shards | Weapon recycling bin. Unwanted weapons go to him to vaporize, feeding both Shards and Artisanism. Secondary coin slot |
| Saya | Sakurafall — jump-type sword, dashes with brief invulnerability on attack; jump items add dashes | Rabbit & Bear — dual-wield | Melee vanguard. All jump and melee items go to her; weapon level comes from vaporizing. Her unlock is simply reaching floor 5 |
| Lúcia | Full stats not published | Two Curio slots, swappable at will | Crystal spender. Curios and crystals prioritise her; rotating two slots doubles each conversion |
| Cassie | Glint — every 4th shot is a lucky shot, power scales with keys held | Carousel Music Box — skill key replaces keys for doors and chests | Team key keeper. All keys go to her; the keys she saves go to demon doors and premium chest rooms |
Cassie joined in the Glimmer Heist update (2026-01-29) and Mira in Fatal Carnival (2025-11-27); the 1.0 roster runs to 10 Agents. Neither new Agent's unlock task has been published, and neither R-7 nor Tino has official mechanics documented — both comps below are built from the six launch Agents plus Cassie, whose kit is known. Numbers for the Agents added by 1.0 and the Archenemy Returns DLC are likewise unpublished.
Comp 1 — Steady economy: "coin and pet twin engines"
Best for a first-time group: high tolerance for mistakes, clean handoffs, and two damage slots covering different ranges.
Members and core items
| Member | Role | Core items | Handoff rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Nik | Wallet + ranged pressure | All coin items, Squid Brooch, Sanctity Sigils | Every coin item goes to him. After the Consumerism loan lands, spend nothing, pushing Squid Brooch past the 300-coin threshold (+30% damage). Below 100 coins the same Artifact is a −10% penalty |
| Elise | Hatchmon core + sustain | Hatchmon items, eggs, hatch items, the Adorable Companion Fate Card | All eggs and Hatchmon-type weapons go to her. Agapeism guarantees hatches and Kiddy revives the team's downed Hatchmon |
| James | Weapon recycling + secondary coin | Unclaimed weapons, Artisan Jar, general Artefacts | Anyone swapping weapons hands the old one straight to him — it feeds Wedding Rings' Soul Shards and Artisanism's Faith in one action |
| Xuan | Bullet management + single target | Wisp items, Clarity Gourd charge items | All Wisps go to him. Spend Gourd charge only on the worst bullet waves; talismans handle elites the rest of the time |
Faith assignment
- Nik → Consumerism. Loan and hoard coins; Fortunism is the fallback.
- Elise → Agapeism. Guaranteed hatches, so Hatchmon count snowballs.
- James → Artisanism. Vaporizing one weapon nearly fills the bar and grants a free weapon, and Wedding Rings doubles the vaporize return — one temple visit, two payouts.
- Xuan → Umbrism. Matches his Wisp kit.
Boss plan
Xuan holds mid-field and spends Gourd charge clearing the hardest bullet waves. Elise stays at medium range letting Hatchmon do the fighting and focuses purely on not dying. Nik plinks from range but never greeds for damage — staying healthy matters more, because with Legacy Watch every hit he takes drains team economy. James takes whatever opening appears and collects all weapon crates from phase transitions for vaporizing. Anyone with a full Faith bar should bank it on the pedestal before entering the boss room.
Comp 2 — Mobile burst: "double-blade rush"
For groups with experienced players: fast floor progression, but demanding on positioning and handoff discipline.
Members and core items
| Member | Role | Core items | Handoff rule |
|---|---|---|---|
| Saya | Melee main carry | All jump and melee items, Ghost Proxy, Artisan Jar | Jump bonuses add dashes to Sakurafall, so mobility is literally her health bar. Ghost Proxy's +20% move speed fits her exactly |
| Lúcia | Crystal burst | All Curios, Cosmic Bag, Blackbrew, Cain Cube | All crystal-conversion items go to her; two Curio slots double each conversion's value |
| Cassie | Key keeper + secondary damage | All team keys, Glint support items | Every key goes to her; Carousel Music Box opens doors and chests for free. Saved keys concentrate on demon doors and premium chest rooms |
| Elise (or Nik) | Safety net | Hatchmon items (or coin items) | Take Elise for sustain, Nik for economy. The safety net only picks up its own item type and never competes with the carry |
Faith assignment
- Saya → Artisanism. Dual-wielding gives her the highest vaporize rate in the party and the biggest temple return.
- Lúcia → Thesaurism. Pairs with her Curio and crystal kit; Consumerism is the alternative.
- Cassie → Consumerism. Her recommended Faith is unpublished; treat her as the second resource slot, borrowing and hoarding keys and coins.
- Safety net. Agapeism on Elise, Fortunism on Nik.
Boss plan
Saya stands on the boss, using dash invulnerability frames to push through attacks in the recovery windows — she is the team's main damage source. Lúcia doesn't hold a position; rotating two Curios gives her a "burst then swap" rhythm, and the team should clear her firing angle during burst windows. Cassie picks off adds spawning at the arena edges with Glint so Saya isn't interrupted at melee range. The safety net plays its own system normally.
This comp has no dedicated bullet manager, so everyone needs their own dodge discipline. Give the Candle Jar to whoever dies most, to buy error tolerance with Faith.
Who gets what
Treat this as a handoff protocol: the moment a drop appears, the owner claims it. Nobody stands on an item holding a meeting.
| Drop | Type | Owner | Reason |
|---|---|---|---|
| Coin items | Coin | Nik (James if no Nik) | Windcaller's laser and Legacy Watch both scale with coins |
| Squid Brooch | Artefact (coin-scaled) | Same coin player | −10% damage below 100 coins, +30% above 300 — only worth it if one player hoards |
| Hatchmon weapons, eggs, hatch items | Hatchmon | Elise | Warming's empowered projectile count grows with Hatchmon; Kiddy revives them in one place |
| Jump and melee items | Jump | Saya | Sakurafall's dash count scales directly off jump bonuses |
| Wisp items | Wisp | Xuan | Fanchen's talisman count and Gourd charge both run on Wisps |
| Curios and crystal-conversion items (Cosmic Bag, Blackbrew, Cain Cube) | Curio | Lúcia | Two rotating slots double each conversion |
| Unwanted weapons | Weapon | James | Vaporize for Soul Shards plus Artisanism Faith — two payouts from one weapon |
| Candle Jar | Hexjar | Faith slot / most likely to die | Fills Faith; at full it triggers Sanctity Sigils' +1 projectile |
| Artisan Jar | Hexjar | Lowest weapon level in the party | Fills weapon experience, patching the team's weakest slot |
| Ghost Proxy | Artefact | Saya or the melee slot | +20% move speed |
| Ring of Regal Majesty | Artefact | Whoever chases sets | Sets require 2 fewer pieces — decide set ownership before handing it over |
| Untyped general items (hearts, shields, attack speed) | Artefact | Currently squishiest player | You have to be alive to deal damage. Don't let your carry enter a boss room on 2 hearts |
Faith and shop coordination
Faith is a per-run resource you can spend at supply shops, on recruiting Hatchmon, or on a gamble — and it can be carried between floors via the pedestal before a boss. In multiplayer:
- Assign each temple to exactly one beneficiary. Consumerism (loans) only for the coin player, usually Nik. Artisanism (vaporize one weapon for a near-full bar plus a free weapon) only for James or Saya — dual-wielders vaporize most often, so they get the most out of it.
- Don't spread Faith evenly. Let the resource player fill the bar and take Sanctity Sigils' full-gauge bonus (damage plus +1 projectile). That beats four players each spending a little.
- Shop purchase order: keys and bombs first, then team-assigned item types, then personal damage gear. After the loan, the coin player buys nothing — Squid Brooch and Windcaller are both waiting on that stockpile.
- Let Elise spend Faith on recruiting Hatchmon. Her Kiddy revive offsets the whole team's pet losses, and it also advances her "hatch 8 Hatchmon" unlock.
- Ask the team before opening a high-variance Oddity like Goblin Chest. It duplicates or confiscates items, so confirm nobody has stashed a core item on the character who is about to open it.
First floor and pre-boss handoff
- Before entering: confirm no two players claim the same item tag. Check Fate Cards — at least one player brings Full of Energy (2 shields at the start, protecting low-heart Agents), Adorable Companion if you have Elise (2 Hatchmon at the start), and anything key-related if you have Cassie — she solves keys herself.
- Floor 1: split up and race through rooms, but hand off challenge-room drops by claimed type immediately. Don't leave coin items on the floor. Keys concentrate on whoever opens demon doors; bombs go to whoever is clearing rock-blocked paths.
- At the shop: the resource player goes in first and buys out keys and bombs with team funds; damage players only top up their own item types. With Cassie present, let her open the expensive chests to maximise the key savings.
- Before the boss door: three checks. Fill Faith where possible and bank it on the pedestal for carry-over. Hand every unwanted weapon to James for Soul Shards. Temporarily pool coin items on Nik or James so Squid Brooch and the coin-scaled weapons cross their thresholds. Elise confirms Kiddy is alive, since it revives fallen pets mid-fight.
- During the boss: Xuan saves Gourd charge for key bullet waves, Saya fights at melee range — the two should stagger their positions rather than competing for the same window. Revive order matters: the resource player comes first, the carry second.
Works without a fixed group
Roles aren't binding — any Agent can run any build, and affinity only makes a build easier to start. If coordinating randoms is too expensive, at minimum agree that "all coins go to one player and all pets go to another". The payoff shows up immediately.
